Comfy, Cute, and Actually Functional Workout Tops? Here’s My List

Comfy, Cute, and Actually Functional Workout Tops? Here’s My List

A few years ago, when I first started working out at home during the lockdown, I had no clue what gear I needed. So what did I do? I went on a massive online shopping spree. I bought workout clothes like my life depended on it.

Tops, sports bras, tanks, long sleeves – I ordered them all. I wanted something that felt soft but also made me look like I had my life together. Honestly? Half of them didn’t fit right. Some were too tight, others kept riding up, and a few were just weirdly itchy. But the ones that worked? I’ve been wearing them on repeat.

So if you’re tired of pulling at your shirt during squats or dealing with sweat marks mid-jump rope, this one’s for you. Let’s talk about good workout tops.

What Makes a Great Workout Top?

A good top shouldn’t distract you. It should support you (not in the bra way—that’s for another article). It should move with you, breathe well, and not make you want to rip it off halfway through your set.

Here’s what I personally look for:

  • Breathable fabric. I sweat. A lot. If it can’t handle moisture, it’s a no from me.

  • Stretch and comfort. I don’t want to feel held back—literally or mentally.

  • Doesn’t ride up. Crop or full-length, it should stay in place.

  • Layer-friendly. Some days it’s hot, some days I throw on a jacket.

  • Cute, obviously. We want to feel good and look good—especially if we’re working out in public.

And I’ll be honest, I used to care less when I worked out at home. But once I started hitting the gym again, having flattering tops became more of a thing. Trust me, it’s not vanity! Nope, it’s comfort.

Popular Materials Used for Workout Tops

Just because it’s labeled “activewear” doesn’t mean it’ll feel good. Materials matter more than most people think.

  • Nylon blends. These are soft, breathable, and great at wicking sweat. Most of my favorite tops use nylon and spandex.

  • Polyester. Durable, quick-drying, and found in a lot of budget-friendly options. Just make sure it’s not stiff.

  • Cotton blends. Not always moisture-wicking, but super comfy for light workouts or rest days.

  • Ribbed knit fabrics. Stretchy and cute. But beware—they can trap sweat if it’s super humid.

  • Mesh panels. Not a full material, but they’re a game changer for airflow.

Sometimes I don’t even look at the brand first. I flip the tag to see the fabric mix. It makes that much of a difference.

The Best Workout Tops You Can Buy

There are tons of options, but some stand out more than others. From budget finds to viral favorites, these tops check the boxes for style, comfort, and wearability.

How to Make Workout Tops Last Longer

Here’s a secret: I used to ruin my tops way too fast. I wasn’t actively trying to do so, but I was definitely unaware of best practices. Now I know better. Here’s how I keep mine fresh without stretching them out or making them smell weird.

  • Wash them in cold water. It helps keep the fibers intact.

  • Avoid fabric softener. It clogs the material and messes with breathability.

  • Air dry when you can. Heat breaks down the stretch. I learned that the hard way.

  • Use a mesh laundry bag. Especially for cropped or ribbed tops that snag easily.

  • Separate darks and lights. Yes, even for gym clothes.

How to Keep Workout Tops Smelling Fresh

This is the real challenge, right? You’re wearing the same tops often. You’re sweating in them. You need them to not stink.

Here’s what helps:

  • Turn them inside out. Wash them that way, too. Sweat builds up on the inside.

  • Rinse after workouts. Even if you’re not washing right away.

  • Don’t leave them in your bag. I’ve done this. Regret it every time.

  • Use enzyme-based detergents. They break down the bacteria.

  • Spritz with fabric spray between washes. Quick fix if you’re re-wearing.

And yes, laundry beads help. A lot. If you’ve ever dealt with musty gym clothes that still smelled after washing? Try them. Here at The Hook Report, we love keeping some in our gym bag, too.

Also – this is personal – but I bring a fresh top to change into after the gym. Nothing feels better. And I like keeping one packed with my protein cookies, pre-workout, and creatine gummies (you know the drill).
